Founder Jenna Hoffstein is speaking this week at two sessions during Casual Connect, the premiere event for the casual games industry:
Indie Entrepreneurship: Lessons from the Trenches
Wednesday 2:00 – 2:50, Imperial Ballroom
Indie is not just about a certain visual aesthetic or gameplay experimentation. Indie is also about being economically sustainable and having the means to keep creating independently. Thriving, let alone surviving, as an indie requires an entrepreneurial skill set (and tenacity) not often discussed. This panel will explore the entrepreneurial side of “indieness” as we hear from four different indie studio co-founders and leaders.
Designing Educational Games for Fun: Throwing Out the Chocolate-Covered Broccoli
Thursday, 2:00 – 2:20, Imperial Ballroom
Educational games struggle, and often fail, to provide entertaining experiences while delivering high-quality educational content. Instead of rewarding players with fun for getting an answer right, this talk will explore how to make the learning itself fun.
IndieCade invited Popcannibal and Dejobaan to show off their game about writing at this sparkly spectacle of money, technology and laminated badges! Mashable followed Popcannibal’s Ziba Scott around as he gawked like a yokel!
We’re incredibly proud to share that The Counting Kingdom has been nominated for the Indie Prize Showcase at Casual Connect ’14! We’ll be flying out to San Francisco in July to exhibit the game at Casual Connect and to attend the Indie Prize Ceremony.

The world got a little freakier on May 1, 2014 as Disco Pixel released their genre-bending rhythm game, Jungle Rumble. The app store featured it on the front page. It jumped to the top of the music game charts. It ushered in a new era of world peace and prosperity. One of these statements is an exaggeration. You can find it in the app store here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jungle-rumble-freedom-happiness/id816012589 Or if you prefer reading about something before spending your hard earned dough, you can check out some reviews here: Indie Gems 148 Apps Pocket Gamer Look at it soar up the charts!
Disco Dodgeball was mentioned in Ars Technica’s ‘30 Games to watch in 2014’ list: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/05/the-ars-indie-showcase-30-games-to-watch-in-2014/2/. Kyle Orland said, “It’s a welcome change from the point-and-kill simplicity of the semi-automatic weapons in most shooters….If there’s any justice in this world, there will be a truly competitive Disco Dodgeball scene among pro gamers in the near future.”
There’s nothing quite as spectacular as a science carnival, and we were sold as soon as we saw the words “Robot Zoo”! We were excited to snag a booth at the Game Corner of the Cambridge Science Carnival, and spent a wonderful Saturday afternoon playing The Counting Kingdom with hundreds of kids!
PAX East was a whirlwind, but what a weekend! A HUGE thank you to everyone who stopped by to play the game – we had kids, parents, teachers, and gamers of all sorts taking their turn to defend the kingdom!
Spells were cast, monsters were defeated, and the day was saved many times over. Everyone loved the puzzle-like mechanics of the game, and had a blast adding their way to victory!
